I love climbing on Portland. It’s made me a bit soft when it comes to trad climbing though. The guide mentions an esoteric VS route called Dragon’s Lair at White Hole. Scramble down to the zawn at low tide, find a cave and negotiate a narrow canyon until daylight is spotted. Then it’s some bridging, caving style, avoiding a variety of obstacles such as fishing buoys until you emerge through a tight blow hole on the cliff top. It’s a good one to surprise the fishermen who having watched irritably as you descend into the zawn are then surprised when you suddenly pop up behind them! The whole expedition is tantalisingly close to the MOD research base at Portland Bill.
